Riding the data tidal wave

Data storage costs, complexity and capacity are all continuing to grow at an alarming rate. According to industry experts, the global volume of data will top one zettabyte (ZB) - the equivalent of a million million gigabytes - by the end of 2010 - rising to a massive 35ZB by 2020.

Without the right storage systems and strategies in place, businesses could soon find themselves drowning in duplicated and non-meaningful data. This will not only impact operational efficiency but also result in higher costs and a loss of agility.

Higher utilisation, lower costs

With extensive IT infrastructure expertise, Computacenter can help your organisation reduce the need for ever-increasing data storage capacity, resulting in cost savings of up to 50 per cent.

Whether you need assistance with data tiering, information lifecycle management, storage virtualisation or business continuity, Computacenter can help you create an optimised storage infrastructure that maximises resource utilisation and minimises risk.

As a result your organisation will be able to:

  • Limit the compound annual growth rate for data storage
  • Reduce operational and capital expenditure
  • Simplify data retrieval for compliance and audit purposes
  • Increase business agility and efficiency

Storage optimisation strategies

As well as offering point solutions for storage optimisation, we help organisations take a more holistic approach by unifying storage strategies and implementations with IT service catalogue and virtualised datacenter initiatives.

Both of these approaches encompass a wide range of storage optimisation technologies and best practices - each of which Computacenter has extensive experience of delivering to customers.  Technologies include:

  • Data deduplication solutions prevent multiple copies of the same files being saved by users across an organisation. With duplicate data accounting for as much as 40 per cent of stored and backed up files, adopting this approach can save critical space and reduce storage costs.
  • Thin provisioning removes inefficiency by transforming how storage resources are allocated. By provisioning data storage to production systems at the block level on an on-demand basis, organisations will be able to increase utilisation rates resulting in lower capital expenditure.
  • Data compression minimises primary storage requirements by compressing information at the block level in real time. To prevent application performance issues, Computacenter helps organisations achieve an optimal balance between data compression and the resources required to uncompress files.
  • Automated tiering enables organisations to create an optimised storage infrastructure for their different datasets. To maximise the benefits of this tiered approach, Computacenter assists organisations with establishing automated policy-based processes that address capacity, cost and compliance concerns.
  • Zero page reclaim helps organisations optimise data storage utilisation by returning idle capacity to a universal pool for reuse. Using this approach, organisations can free up as much of 70 per cent of their storage resources. Zero page reclaim technologies are particularly beneficial when used in tandem with thin provisioning.

By leveraging these and other technologies, Computacenter has been able to help a range of customers optimise their storage resources. For example, we helped Lancashire Constabulary overcome the ever-increasing demand for data storage by developing a flexible and scalable strategy.

By using different tiers of storage for different types of data, the police force now has a cost-effective storage platform that will support its needs for years to come. Read the full case study here.
