Computacenter's Release and Deployment Management service helps protect and manage the integrity of live customer environments and their services, through controlled delivery of patch, software and hardware updates.

What we do

Computacenter's Release and Deployment Management service builds, tests and delivers software and/or service updates into the customer environment. Our service consists of structured, repeatable processes:

Plan
Documenting the preciserequirements, including the contentand timing of each release. This is managed tightly with change control, ensuring accuracy and quality at each stage of the process.

Test
A controlled introduction of the release into the customer test environment (where available) to assess implications of the proposed updates, and remediate where required. This ensures releases will not cause server downtime, impact the workforce with workstations failing to reboot, or have any adverse effect on key business applications.

Release
We then utilise our best-practice deployment processes to ensure the controlled introduction of releases into the production environment, using Computacenter or your own toolsets as agreed. The service covers Windows end-user and server platforms, but can also be extended to include other operating platforms such as Unix, Linux, AIX or Solaris.

Where we have done it

South Lanarkshire Council
South Lanarkshire Council is one of Scotland's largest local authorities, providing services to 307,000 people and employing 16,000 staff. Its PC estate has been managed by third parties since the late 1990s, and in early 2004 it extended that service by awarding an £11 million contract to Computacenter, covering 5,000 desktops, laptops and printers.

Jill Ashcroft, South Lanarkshire's service delivery manager, has already observed "appreciable differences" in desktop services. "Managing such a distributed desktop estate can be extremely challenging, and initiatives such as pre-imaging and security patch management will help us both reduce costs and complexity," says Ashcroft.
